Too Many Questions–Not Enough Answers

Before you start some work, always ask yourself three questions - Why am I doing it, What the results might be and Will I be successful. Only when you think deeply and find satisfactory answers to these questions, go ahead. – Chanakya

I don't pretend we have all the answers. But the questions are certainly worth thinking about. - Arthur C. Clarke

The wise man doesn't give the right answers, he poses the right questions. - Claude Levi-Strauss

We have no right to express an opinion until we know all of the answers. - Kurt Cobain

The #1206 “fiction” series continues …

He stared at the mind map before him, an encapsulation of more than 45 years of unusual events in his Life and in the lives of people close to him.  For years he had sought answers to the mystery contained within these events and despite asking as many people as he could, their answers were fleeting, sparse, questionable and lacked any kind of supporting evidence.  As someone grounded in the 21st century who had built his entire life around information, he needed irrefutable data to accompany their answers and there was none.

He sought clarity to all of the events and so he had drawn a mind map to help him obtain the clarity.  After he had drawn it, he realized the enormity and complexity of the mystery.

“Now I see why this bothers me as it does”, he thought to himself as he stared at the mind map in front of him.

Mind Map

He allowed his eyes to roam randomly over the mind map as each bubble in the map triggered a memory for him.

He thought of the face he saw through his bedroom window when he was four years old.  The face was not human and stared at him coldly as the only thing between the 4 inches of space between himself and the face was the pane of glass itself.  He had leapt from his bed then and run for his bedroom door, screaming for his parents.  As he ran from his bedroom, he turned and looked towards the window.

The face stared at him unsmiling.

His parents went outside, searching around the house, but had found nothing.

Another bubble reminded him of the time he found himself getting out of bed in the middle of the night, looking through the window for “something” and seeing someone outside press up against the outside wall as if desiring not to be seen.  Suddenly, “others” were in the room with him and despite his struggles, proceeded to carry him outside through the closed window.

He woke up standing on the front lawn watching a group of lights retreat into the night sky.

Another bubble brought back a memory of driving down a highway in the rural town where he had grown up and as he came around a turn, he suddenly stopped his car when he thought he saw an accident blocking the road.  He was blinded by bright flashing lights and stopped quickly when he realized that a group of people were spread across the road and slowly advancing towards him.  They approached slowly and methodically and it wasn’t until he realized that someone was standing by his car that he became aware that something was wrong.  The figure beside the car started to bend down as if to look into the car window and his awareness of the event suddenly stopped.

He awoke two hours later parked on the side of the road and the “accident” and the people on the road were gone.

And yet another bubble reminded him of the night he and wife were sleeping with their newborn child asleep in the crib.  He had had a disturbing dream that night and over the course of breakfast the next morning, began to relate the dream to his wife and she interrupted him by completing the dream.  They were startled by the realization that they had both dreamt the same dream, of a group of “people” standing around their child’s crib while they were unable to get up and find out what was going on.  Later hypnosis would reveal that they both had experienced an event where they had been prevented from getting up by someone with its face in theirs telling them repeatedly “don’t be afraid” as “others” stood around their child’s crib for a reason unknown to them.

His eyes flicked randomly over the mind map again.

He remembered the time when his child was two and they were reading a Dora the Explorer book together.  For reasons unknown to him, there was an image in the book of an alien in the middle of the jungle and his child pointed to it, unprompted, and said “friend”.  He remembered with a chill that his child said “friend” every time the child saw that image.

And then about a year later, while reading that same book, his child pointed to the alien image and said “scary”.  Shortly after that, the child began having nightmares about “the invisibles” that came into their room to do “bad things”.  The child, while obviously frightened, could never remember details.

Then there was the time he was driving in the White Hills of New Hampshire about 11pm one midsummer’s night when suddenly the inside of his vehicle was bathed in an intense blue light.  Assuming that it was from a police helicopter above him, he looked through the windshield and couldn’t see anything nor was there anything shining a light in through any of the windows.  He also realized that the light inside the vehicle had no shadows, as if emanating from many sources simultaneously.  He shivered and thought, “I’ve been driving too long today – I need to find a hotel and get off the road.” and at that moment, the light winked out.  His wife slept in the passenger seat beside him, not stirring, and as he reflected on how fatigued he must be to be imagining such things, his son, sitting in the car seat behind him, asked in a quiet voice, “What was that blue light, Daddy?”

Another bubble brought back a memory of one morning when his child, at the age of four, came screaming into his bedroom that “an ugly man” was staring at him through his bedroom window.  He shivered when memory of that morning triggered another thought, that his child had experienced other unusual events at the same times in his Life and in the same order as he had when he was young.  He had never told anyone about them but had written them down.  He had checked them off one by one as his child experienced them in the same order.

He never told his child anything, preferring to observe rather than feed the potential imagination of a child who might make up things to make a father happy.

Their parallel lives and the shared events continued for years.

The mind map represented decades of a mystery that he had accumulated and that had accompanied his family wherever he went.

Unusual events, unusual dreams and even physical evidence left on his body that had been questioned and examined by doctors – all which yielded no answers to the many questions asked.

It tormented his mind – a mind driven to understand the “why” of things.

And yet no answers of any credibility came.

People offered theories of aliens, guardian angels, demons and practically everything else, each suggestion based on their Life experiences and their personal biases but to his frustration, were always presented without evidence to support their theory.  Some had suggested mental illness of some form or perhaps a brain tumor but opinions expressed by some of the best doctors in the arenas of psychiatry and psychology had strongly rejected any such suggestion.

And now he sat in front of his keyboard, burning with a desire to share his experiences while cognizant of the impact of possibly being lumped together with the mentally unwell, the faker looking to make a quick buck or the person whose life was so empty that they would do anything to claim their 15 minutes of fame.

He wanted nothing to do with any of them.

He only wanted answers.

Why had these things happened?

Why were they still happening?

Was his family in danger?

The bubbles on his mind map each contained a story – stories that ranged from the odd to the unusual to the terrifying.

The stories described events that had been experienced by others in addition to himself - events that intrigued him, frightened him, annoyed him and made him angry.

He had been frightened by it as a child but now he was concerned for the safety and well-being of his family.

And besides, he didn’t like mysteries in his Life.

Now this mystery burned in his mind, insisting on being shared and demanding to be solved.

He had no idea where to start.

And so he stared at his screen and wondered, “What do I do now?”

To be continued.

Background

This piece of “fiction” actually describes personal experiences that I have lived with for my entire Life.  What is the origin of the events described here and the many other events not described?  I have no idea.  Many suggestions have been made as previously noted – I have dismissed them all without data and had my sanity corroborated by people who know more about such things than I do.

I have subjected myself to hypnosis which terrified those present during the session.  I have no recollection of the events described in the session but occasional flashbacks from the session have not been pleasant.

I have subjected myself to analysis by some of the best minds in the psychiatry / psychology industry and all have come to the same conclusion – I am normal (whatever that means), have no physical or mental illnesses of any type and they believe that I have experienced the events as I described them.

Why I am sharing these events now?

Again, I have no idea – perhaps my mind believes that someone out there can provide the data that answers the questions I have asked for decades.

Perhaps my sharing will help others understand that they don’t need to hide from others who suggest that they have lost their mind.

And maybe it just feels good to get it off my chest.

Or maybe it’s all of the above.

Some have told me that it takes great courage to share such a story.  Maybe although I disagree.  Why is courage required to share a personal truth when many people fill the world with negativity, misinformation, hate or confusion without a second thought?

People often fear what they don’t know or understand and are often uncomfortable around people who act in a courageous manner while they secretly wish they had the same level of courage to share their own story or pursue their own dream.  Lack of courage on their part then becomes their MO to discredit or disparage the alleged courage of others since it is often easier and “safer” to attack the courage of others than it is to exhibit one’s own sense of courage.

I know posting this will attract the crazy people – that’s what spam filters are for.  Some people are so crazy that merely saying “good morning” can launch them into a diatribe that demonstrates their insanity so I’m not concerned about them.

But perhaps someone out there can offer a nugget of knowledge to someone who requires data for practically everything he does.

Perhaps.

Series Origin

This series, a departure from my usual musings, is inspired as a result of conversations with former senior advisors to multiple Presidents of the United States, senior officers in the US Military and other interesting folks as well as my own professional background as a Wall St. / Fortune 25 strategy and large-scale technology architect.

While this musing is just “fiction” and a departure from my musings on technology, strategy, politics and society, as a strategy guy, I do everything for a reason and with a measurable outcome in mind. :-)

This “fictional” musing is a continuation of the #1206 series noted here.

Falling Oil Prices, Wall Street and the End of the World

We live in constant tension between the urgent and the important. - Charles E. Hummel

The #1206 “fiction” series continues ….

Paul sat in bored silence as the instructor in front of the class outlined the classic urgency vs. importance matrix.  He looked down at the matrix in front of him and wondered why his boss insisted that he go to this stupid class.  He looked at his watch and realized that he needed to bail out of the class soon anyway in order to get in the line-up at the Apple store.  “The new phone is worth waiting in line for 18 hours”, he thought as he smiled to himself.

He sighed in boredom and looked down at the grid that the instructor was referring to.

Importance versus Urgency Matrix

When the matrix failed to keep his mind occupied, he turned his attention to his phone and thumbed through the news.  The headlines in his news app screamed about the price of oil falling to $40 a barrel, Wall St. experts fearing a collapse of the financial markets and something about Russia and its ongoing issues.

Thumbing further down in the news, he grunted when he read about the top ten threats facing the world.  “The usual suspects”, he thought as he glanced over probability analysis of nuclear war, asteroid impact, global climate change, and the like.  While seeing nuclear war as the number one risk in the list came as no surprise, he chuckled with amusement when he saw alien invasion listed as a potential candidate on the list.

His attention returned to the instructor who was talking about the appropriate place in the matrix into which each task of our lives should be placed but he quickly zoned out again as he thought of his new phone.  “It will be so cool”, he thought.

The President, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and a number of advisors sat around the boardroom table discussing the latest developments in Russia.

“And so, Mr. President”, said a young analyst, “We believe that the Russian economy will collapse in a serious recession around the end of the first quarter of 2015.  The sanctions are having their desired effect.”

“This is what we wanted, is it not?”, asked the President, “Won’t this bring them back to the bargaining table as we desired?”

“Possibly”, replied the analyst, “But there is one possibility we didn’t count on.”

“And what is that?”, asked the President, frowning at the thought that a possibility existed that he had not been briefed on.

“Well”, said the analyst, his voice quavering with nervousness, “There is a possibility that Russia may come out fighting rather than begging.”

“What do you mean?”, demanded the President.

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs cleared his throat and stood up as the cue for his analysis presented itself.

“It’s like this, Mr. President”, he began.

The head of SETI, the Search For Extraterrestrial Intelligence, glanced over the report summarizing the month’s activities.  Despite the pleas of Stephen Hawking and others, SETI had moved forward with its plan to proactively beam a radio signal into space outlining the location of Earth and asking for intelligent species elsewhere to consider visiting Earth.

“Stephen Hawking and the rest of the naysayers are wrong”, he thought, “Anyone who could travel this far would have to be friendly.”

The clerk in the National Health Institute nervously reread the email in front of her.  It contained specific directions regarding a request to begin distributing radiation and suicide pills to major hospitals across the country.  The email didn’t explain why but did stress the importance of completing the task as soon as possible and to notify the sender when the task was complete.

Years later ….

Paul walked in deep thought down a quiet street on a crisp, fall night.  It had been about four years since he had taken the course on importance versus urgency.  While he had been insulted to be forced to take the course at the time, understanding the difference between what was important and what was urgent had finally dawned upon him and he had used the information to turn his Life around.  Once he saw the positive results that the mind shift had presented, he had been aggressively recommending to others that they needed to take the time to understand the principles.  He wondered if the world would ever understand what he had learned.

He sighed in contentment and gratitude as he thought about how his Life had changed over the last four years and he looked up into the night sky to say a prayer of thanks.  He was startled as the night sky began to fill with lights, far brighter and larger than any stars in the sky.

”Multiple targets”, announced a technician deep in the bowels of NORAD headquarters in Colorado.

“Targets confirmed”, affirmed another technician as she eyed her monitors.  “Confirm DEFCON 1 status.”

“DEFCON 1 status confirmed”, announced the supervising officer.  “Prepare to launch counterattack.”

Meanwhile deep in the bowels of the Joint Strategic Command Center in Yekaterinburg in Russia, similar orders were being given.

Just outside a small village deep in the middle of Africa, the villagers approached the small metallic-looking object carefully.  It was partially buried in the ground on the outskirts of their village, having been observed to have fallen there in a blaze of fire and a roar of thunder the night before.  Its door had fallen open on impact and the village chief peered tentatively inside.

The small room he saw was empty.  Seemingly suspended in the air on the opposite side of the room, strange symbols flashed in an unknown language.  As he watched, the pattern repeated itself several times and then winked out.

Scratching his head in wonder, he suddenly felt a shiver of fear and stepped outside.  Facing his people, he could only shake his head, having no idea what this object from heaven was.

It was the second strange thing that had happened in his village.  Earlier that day, all communication with the capital city had suddenly ceased and they were unable to reach anyone by phone or radio.

A hyperspace radio signal raced across the Universe, having just been transmitted by an emergency beacon on the surface of what was left of Terra.  The message it contained was brief:

Project to recommend deactivation of Terran nuclear weapons in exchange for advanced knowledge has failed.  Advance diplomatic ships destroyed.  Nuclear defense systems on Terra have been deployed.  Message ends.

To be continued.

Background:

As a long time Wall St’er, I have been watching the market with interest for some time as analysts predict that it will continue to get stronger with no end in sight.  Unfortunately, with the economies of Europe, the US and China being artificially propped up, there will be an end to the bull market and it likely won’t be gentle.  I believe this end is now on the near horizon.

The potential for $40 a barrel oil is real and the ramifications are not well understood.  Fracking, the controversial technique that has helped the US reach energy independence, has a breakeven price of $42 a barrel.  Sustained valuation below this level brings uncertainty to the US and to the world.

A Russia that faces significant financial uncertainty could possibly respond in a way that we would not anticipate.  A major recession by the end of the first quarter of 2015 has been predicted for Russia, potentially causing them to come out fighting for survival.  Then we have this little ditty in the news as explained in the NY Times article “Pentagon to Press Russia on Arms Pact Violation” where we intend to use military options to protest their military decisions.  There is plenty of room for error there.  It is also important to remember that a nuclear war can be started by accident.  Google “Russian nuclear weapon launch by accident” to read about some sobering near-accidents in our history.

Regarding radiation pills, there have been rumors for years that some governments have plans to distribute radiation and suicide pills in case of nuclear attack.  Whether this be the stuff of conspiracy or is in fact true remain to be determined.  However, there is this interesting page on the CDC website regarding radiation pills.

As for SETI, it is indeed broadcasting a signal into space with the hopes that it will attract extraterrestrials.  They believe all extraterrestrials are friendly.  Stephen Hawking is on record as saying that we should not assume this and that such efforts may produce our doom.  No one can know if they would be benevolent or malevolent until they show up – if they do.

And as for an extraterrestrial invasion, there are certain elements within our own military that have implemented plans for a defense against an alien invasion while at the same time denying that such things are possible.

By the way, understanding the Urgent vs. Important matrix that Paul was bored with provides valuable insight into what drives your Life (or how your Life drives you).

All of these things provide a tantalizing opportunity for a little fun in this story but in the story there is a warning.

Do you think the world understands the difference between that which is urgent and that which is important?

As you think about this question, understand that some analysts think that the probability of nuclear war within the next five years is very high.

Now ask yourself the same question again.

Then ask yourself if you understand the difference.

And then ask yourself how you know.

Take Me To Your Leader

Whose leadership, whose judgment, whose values do you want in the White House when that crisis lands like a thud on the Oval Office desk? - Rahm Emanuel

Politics is in a crisis because it's separated from our deep humanity. - Marianne Williamson

A man has no more character than he can command in a time of crisis. - Ralph W. Sockman

The #1206 “fiction” series continues ….

In our near future ….

For the first time in the modern era, the residents of the planet Earth stood unified in silence as the message before them either frightened or stunned them.  Across television screens, laptops, tablets and smart phones, the same message scrolled in the native language of the viewer.

The message read:

Greetings to the people of Earth.  We have travelled a great distance over time and space seeking the best leaders of your planet.  You have 24 hours to identify those of your species that best exemplify the leadership qualities we desire for an important mission elsewhere.  Your planet will be rewarded handsomely for complying with our request.

6 hours later …..

In an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in New York, the permanent and temporary members argued vehemently over who should represent the Earth on this historic occasion.  The US ambassador argued that as the most powerful nation on Earth, the US should represent the planet.  Other nations argued that as older nations, their cultures better represented the Earth in general.  At the same time, bureaucrats in the bowels of UN Headquarters argued over the nature of the reward being promised.

Meanwhile, the leaders of NATO met in an undisclosed location in Belgium to review their military retaliatory options should the discussions with the visitors not turn out as expected.  The participants also excitedly discussed the possibility of the reward being some type of military weapon that would provide them with military superiority.

The citizens of Earth waited in expectation of what their leaders would decide.

The visitors waited patiently.

12 hours later ….

The President of the United States stared bleary-eyed at the briefing notes in front of him.  The UN was paralyzed and seemed unable to produce any form of selection criteria that could be used to offer the visitors the leaders that best represented the Earth.  In addition, NATO representatives had expressed concern that Russia and China were both signalling potentially aggressive behavior and had armed some of their respective space-based arsenals.  On the advice of his Joint Chiefs of Staff, the President agreed to move to DEF CON 2 to protect the US against any aggressive acts by other nations.

Meanwhile in Russia and China, Presidents Putin and Xi Jinping were informed that US military ready status had escalated and they notified their respective military leaders to take similar action in response.

The citizens of Earth waited nervously as their leaders had still not expressed their intentions.

The visitors waited patiently.

18 hours later ….

The UN Security Council meeting had ended in frustration with no solution in sight.  Embassies around the world buzzed with activity as nations accused each other of unfairly manipulating dialog or using the threat of military action to exert influence over the selection of the leaders as requested by the visitors.

The “red phone” was silent as Presidents Obama and Putin had exchanged sharp opinions an hour earlier as to why each of their respective nations deserved the right to represent the Earth.  President Obama had cut off dialog in frustration but not before warning President Putin that any aggressive act on the part of Russia would be met in kind by the United States.

The citizens of Earth feared what their leaders appeared to be contemplating.

The visitors waited patiently.

24 hours later ….

Military systems around the world began activating, target acquisition systems verified targets and the great military machines of the planet Earth became fully aware that their purpose was about to be realized.

Suddenly, with as little warning as when the visitors arrived, televisions, laptops, tablets and smart phones around the world came to life and a message from the visitors began to scroll across the devices in the native language of the viewer.

The message read:

We have selected the people whom we believe best exemplify strong leadership characteristics within your species.  Here are the leaders that we have selected and taken aboard our craft.

What followed included descriptions of a teacher in Arkansas who went above and beyond to help underprivileged students, a six year old girl in Australia who raised funds to help a fellow student pay for cancer treatment, a young man in China who leapt into an icy cold river in his hometown to save a drowning woman and a wealthy businessman who turned all of his wealth over to a research company closing in on a cure for cancer.

The list of names was long and represented the best in humanity.  It included people who sacrificed themselves for others, those who put themselves at risk for others, those whose love for the downtrodden was so strong that they dedicated their Life to lifting others, those who led by example (not by abuse of wealth or power) and those who spent their Lives inspiring others to raise themselves to their ultimate potential.

The list glaringly omitted what appeared to humans to be the obvious leadership candidates - those who comprised the wealthy, the powerful and the elite in government, business and religion.

The message concluded with a thank you and a reminder that the people of Earth would soon receive their promised reward.

Departure

As the visitor ship began to pull away from the Earth and return to its own time in the Earth’s future, two occupants of the spacecraft observed the receding blue planet on a large monitor.

“The people of Earth have indeed produced some incredible leadership candidates”, observed the first occupant, the commander of the vessel.

“Very true”, replied his companion.  “We must prepare to deliver the reward that we promised.  They have earned it.”

“I agree”, nodded the Commander.  Tapping a small communication device on his collar, he informed the responding crew member to deliver the reward to the people of Earth.

“I’m not sure that’s possible”, replied the crew member. “As I observe the time dimension that we are leaving, there appears to be some type of military conflagration developing on the planet.  It appears that some form of primitive nuclear weapon exchange has begun between the nations of the planet.”

“How unfortunate”, replied the Commander.  “The reward of unlimited, unconditional peace amongst all creatures as we have shared with millions of planets was within their grasp.  They were so close to learning that true power originates not from the wealthy and powerful but from within the power of the heart and Spirit of the individual.  Unfortunate indeed that they have missed such a great learning opportunity.”

“Do you think their demise is our fault?  Maybe the nature of our request and our reward created the problem that we are now witnessing”, asked his colleague.

“No”, replied the Commander.  “We didn’t alter their behavior.  Our presence merely revealed its potential – good and bad.”

His colleague nodded in silence as they observed the final gasps of Life on the planet Earth evaporate for eternity.

Back to the present ....

"Mr. President", came a voice on the phone, "There is a call from a Doctor Jerry Ehman on line 2 for you.  He says it's urgent."

"Thank you, Janice", replied the President.

Picking up the phone, he spoke quietly.  "Good afternoon, Dr. Ehman.  How may I help you today?", he asked.

"Mr. President", came a quiet voice on the other end of the phone.  "I believe we have a problem."

“Do you know what’s worth fighting for?

When it’s not worth dying for? – 21 Guns (Green Day)

To be continued.

Background:

The red phone, which provides secure communication between Washington and Moscow is in fact not a phone but a secure email exchange system between the leaders of the US and Russia.

Dr. Jerry Ehman is an American radio astronomer who discovered the Wow! signal in 1977, the first radio signal purported to originate from extraterrestrial sources.

I am intrigued by four themes or questions here:

  • Be careful what you fight for and therefore choose your fights carefully.
  • Not all gifts are beneficial.
  • Who are the real leaders here on Earth?
  • How do you know?

Preparing For the Imminent Alien Invasion

I was amused to see an announcement this week that two Congresswomen were putting forward a motion to set aside the Apollo landing sites on the moon as a National Park.

If passed, the legislation requires that the National Park Service have a group responsible for managing the park within a year of passing the bill and that a draft of a plan for managing the park must be tabled within 18 months of passing the bill.

I guess we can consider the following items complete if we have time to consider such legislation:

1. The issue that 1 in 6 Americans are using food stamps to get by must have been resolved.

2. The issues in the Middle East and other areas of the world must have been taken care of.

3. Worries regarding the ever-growing cost of Obamacare must have been addressed.

4. Concerns around the solvency of social security must have been solved once and for all.

5. Concerns around the storage of nuclear waste have been taken care of.

6. The impact of GMOs on our health has been addressed to our satisfaction.

7. Employment numbers are still woefully below what they should be but that’s ok – we have embraced this as the new definition of a successful economy.

8. The fact that nuclear power plants and nuclear arsenals may someday be compromised remotely by hackers, worms or viruses have been completely addressed.

9. Insert your own concern here.

These may seem important but there are some REALLY important things that arise from the existence of such legislation:

1. Will the park offer free admission for its first year of operation?

2. Can I write off the cost of the trip to the park?

3. Will weight-loss companies show misleading commercials, highlighting earth and moon weights, suggesting that they are responsible for the miraculous apparent weight loss (at least until you return home)?

4. Given that PayPal is now working on a solution for payments originating from space, at least I don’t have to have cash on hand when buying one of my favorite treats at the park – moon pies of course.

5. Pursuant to the previous point, what will my data roaming rate be when I complete a PayPal transaction on the moon and what foreign exchange rate will be provided by my credit card company?

6. Have we considered the aliens who, according to conspiracy theorists, live on the far side of the moon but who probably have not been consulted about the park being built in their backyard?

Yes … I’m being silly and having a bit of fun.

Well …. sort of.

What if point #6 turns out to be real, the aliens get their space knickers in a knot and they come to Earth to kick us around.

If that happens, you should make sure you have a copy of Dr. Travis Taylor’s “Alien Invasion: The Ultimate Survival Guide to the Ultimate Attack” on hand, just in case.  The book is much better than the reviewers suggest – you know how those naysayers and people in denial are. ;-)

Of course you’ll want to make sure you have the hardcopy since everyone knows that the aliens will open their invasion with an EMP, wiping out e-readers. :-)

I read the book on the recommendation of a couple of Air Force officer buddies and then I realized something.

If you don’t believe in aliens and their plans for imminent invasion and you use the book as an emergency preparedness guide for terrestrial-based challenges, you will be much better prepared for almost anything that may happen in our future (with the exception of nuclear war, biological weapon attack, mass coronal ejection, ………).

Well … you will still be better off. :-)

And if you do believe in aliens and their intentions for imminent invasion, you will have the good fortune of being able to say “See? I told you so” with a smile to your neighbours when CNN broadcasts the announcement of mandatory “physicals”. :-)

All jests aside, the bottom line is this

Preparedness and paranoia are two separate things.

Information and obsession are two separate things.

Which one of each pair do you embrace?

Why or why not?

How do you know?

As for the possibility of an imminent alien invasion and whether such an arrival would be good or bad, I have my own opinions.

But for now, I offer Mel Gibson’s musings from the movie Signs. :-)

In service and servanthood,

Harry

Note:

I wrote this in a more tongue-in-cheek fashion than I usually do.  There is method to my madness. :-)

Addendum:

Out of respect for conspiracy people who believe we never landed on the moon, all visitors to the park will be blindfolded in order to maintain the mystery. :-)

Aliens–And Now For Something Completely Different

Long-time readers of my blog, looking for content regarding strategy, business guidance, wake-up calls, calls for accountability or stories to grab their heart may be amused by the title.

In fact, when I contemplated writing this, I had an image of John Cleese sitting at his desk …. this image … found at 2:20 of the following clip.

Thousands of people have written me over the years to ask for my opinions on aliens, alien abductions and everything in between.

While I’d like to ask them why they are asking me, in truth it’s partially my own fault.

Having consulted to some curious parties who will remain unnamed, having a former father-in-law, now deceased, who was a USAF Colonel working on black projects at Wright Patterson AFB and who occasionally shared details of them after one scotch too many and after having written some musings on sort-of-related subjects, I guess I have it coming.

Some of the musings can be found here:

Financial Crisis

Divide and Conquer

Preventing A Disaster – Or Preparing To Survive One

Truth or Fiction – Perception and Life Experiences (one of my father-in-law’s stories)

Yep – I deserve to be bombarded by questions, especially questions about the recent TV Series Alien Mysteries.

And so instead of answering them one email / SMS at a time, I will answer everyone at once.

Consider this.

If …..

- you were routinely abducted in the middle of the night

- you were taken whenever and wherever someone else wished to take you

- you had no say as to whether you were taken or not

- you were routinely examined and / or sexually examined / assaulted

- the abductions continued for years

- there was a chance that this event was hereditary in nature and that previous or later generations might experience the same thing

…. do you REALLY think you could recount your story in vivid detail with a smile on your face or a sense of “my purpose is to bring a message to mankind”?

Exactly.

Many assault victims from Terrestrial sources blot out the entire experience for reasons of self-preservation.  They don’t recount such details with a smile or how such assaults are part of their purpose and destiny.

The “victims” in Alien Mysteries are either:

- misguided (or guided by an over-zealous producer)

- deluded or in need of medical attention

- attention seekers

- snake-oil salesmen/women

- some combination of the above.

I’m waiting for one of the victims to lament that the examination probe was somewhat painful, after which the segment will be followed by a commercial espousing the sensual nature of personal lubricant products.

Or as one friend of mine SMS’d me and made me burst out laughing in a public place, maybe the events recounted by these people and the commercial could be morphed into an erotic series called “50 Shades of Greys”.

That’s when the real value of this program will be revealed ….

…. in its commercial / promotional value, as Dr. Steven Greer has discovered with his “Disclosure Project”.

But as a reveal-all documentary, don’t waste your time or your precious brain.

As far as my own beliefs go, I’m a pragmatic, data-focused, evidence-based, strategy-centric guy, surrounded by powerful clients who believe in such things and with a collection of life experiences that make for terrifying campfire stories.

What conclusions can you draw from that?

None.

Whatever is out there will or will not reveal itself when it / they are ready to.  Until that event occurs, if it ever does, continue to focus on the needs of the Earth.

Because it and the curious inhabitants who are Terrestrial in nature need a lot more attention than the Great Gazoo and his merry band of Extraterrestrials.

At least for now.

Now if you will excuse me, there’s an unusual blue light illuminating my backyard and a strangely familiar song playing …..

I thought that they were angels but much to my surprise,

We climbed aboard their starship and headed for the skies - “Come Sail Away” – Styx

And in the spirit of music and Monty Python, I will close with the very appropriate “Galaxy Song”. :-)

I noted with interest and amusement, elevated reading statistics originating from several US military groups.  I’d love to make a tongue-in-cheek comment in fun but I’m liable to fuel the misdirected passion of the conspiracy crowd, those who need medical help or those who are easily misled.

So I’ll leave it as “reading stats noted” with a grateful nod to those who put themselves at risk every day so that we can enjoy the freedoms that we have.

One other item … a long distance dedication, an interesting musing, a warning and a great hit from the past, all rolled into one. :-)

I had an opportunity tonight to watch the much (over?) hyped Sirius Documentary by Dr. Steven Greer.

After watching it, I tweeted the following comment:

Yup …… Sirius Documentary: Where facts, myths, smart / conspiracy people, New Agers, Marshall Applewhite, Zeitgeist & Ancient Aliens collide #fail

I usually post a link when I reference something but this time I didn’t even bother.  Why?  Because it’s a tremendous waste of time, energy and money – for the creators as well the viewers.

If there is a truth out there that is just beyond our horizon, this movie doesn’t bring anyone any closer to discovering it.

Truth or Fiction–Perception and Life Experience

People who know me well know that I’m as pragmatic as they come.  In fact, I am sometimes perceived as one of the toughest skeptics in business because of my demand of others to back claims, beliefs and ideas with hard data and research. As I have often said to others when they approach me with a business intention and a gut feeling that they will make a bazillion dollars without a shred of evidence, strategy, research or planning, “it sucks when reality gets in the way of dreams”.

This afternoon, as I completed a stack of paperwork for clients and had a moment to pause, a conversation I had many years ago with my now-deceased father-in-law came to mind and it caused me to reflect upon it.

He had an interesting career.  He was a decorated B-25 pilot in WWII (appearing on the cover of Life magazine at the time) and went on to serve his country in the USAF, Strategic Air Command and Air National Guard before retiring with the rank of Colonel.

He was sharp as a tack, uber-pragmatic and had zero tolerance for “BS artists”.  He loved his country and while I knew he worked on some “interesting projects” at Wright Patterson AFB and other locations, he never shared his work or the secrets he was privy to.

However, he did have one interesting story that I have often thought about and for some reason as I completed my paperwork today, it came to mind.

One night we were sitting in his living room with its gorgeous views of the mountains.  He had been partaking of a little Scotch and we had been enjoying some idle chatter about everything and nothing, including recent advances in military technology.

Suddenly he got really serious, looked at me with his piercing eyes and asked me “Where do you think most of our recent advances in military technology have come from?”

I stopped for a moment, shrugged and said “With so many contractors working for the government, it’s not hard to see how smart people can create this stuff”.

Without hesitation, he asked again “It doesn’t come from here.  Where do you really think it comes from?”

Sensing that I had guessed poorly the first time, I responded “I don’t know.  Did we steal it from someone else, maybe the Russians or the Chinese?”

Getting a little agitated, he said “I just told you that it doesn’t come from here.  Where do you think it comes from?”

I had no response now, since if we didn’t create it and we hadn’t “borrowed it” from someone else, I had no suggestion.

He  persisted and asked me again where I thought it came from.

It appeared that he wanted me to guess something without actually telling me.  I was starting to get the idea of what he was inferring but I wanted to hear it from him and so I played dumb.  We explored the topic for a little while before he called it a night and went to bed.

The next morning over breakfast, he looked at me across the table and said “I probably had a little too much to drink last night and may have said a few things I shouldn’t have said.  Anything we discussed last night is not to be discussed further”.

I made some crack about sharing it only with my closest friends and he hit his fist on the table and said “God damn it,  I’m not kidding.  It’s in your best interests to forget what we spoke about”.

The look in his eyes told me he wasn’t kidding and I assured him that I would be quiet about it.

Over the years, I have only shared this story with a few close friends but I have never shared it publicly until now, even thought what I am sharing is only part of what we discussed.

Even as I write this, I have no idea why I am sharing it on a blog where I muse about about leadership, strategy, technology and living.

However, as I think about that late-night conversation, a couple of quotes come to mind by people writing off things as impossible:

"Flight by machines heavier than air is unpractical and insignificant, if not utterly impossible." - Simon Newcomb, 1902

"There is not the slightest indication that nuclear energy will ever be obtainable. It would mean that the atom would have to be shattered at will." -- Albert Einstein, 1932

So when I think back to the night when my father-in-law and I debated the mysterious, controversial origins of modern military technology and I think of brilliant people in the past who said that many of the things that we take for granted were once believed to be impossible, I wonder …..

Is it possible that in many situations, the difference between what we delineate as truth or fiction has nothing to do with what we are judging but is entirely based on the life experiences of the person doing the judging?

Perhaps if we were to come to this realization, we would stop looking at proving everything as right or wrong but instead, would use such opportunities to fill gaps in our knowledge.

As perhaps my father-in-law tried to do with me, the uber-left-brained skeptic who insists upon hard data before moving something from the “fiction” box to the “truth” box.

And besides, implying that modern military technology has its origins from “somewhere / someone else” is just fiction.

Isn’t it?
