We ...McDonald’s Canada Statement – November 6, 2014
We have looked into the situation you referenced in Calgary, which appears to be the result of a very unfortunate misunderstanding.

At McDonald’s Canada, selling poppies in our corporate and franchised restaurants is a time-honoured tradition and an important way for us to spread the spirit of gratefulness we all share for our veterans. We are proud to support the Royal Canadian Legion in honoring the service of our Canadian veterans and soldiers again this year.

All McDonald’s restaurants have the option of providing a location inside or outside the restaurant where Royal Canadian Legion veterans and other authorized volunteers can distribute poppies in person. Alternatively, an authorized Royal Canadian Legion poppy box can be left in an area that can be safely monitored. However, we do not allow them on the front counter since the poppies contain pins that can present a food safety risk to our guests.

The local Legion was aware of our policy, and advised they would not have a volunteer at the restaurant this year. Since we cannot place a collection box on the front counter for food safety reasons, they chose not to provide a poppy box to the restaurant.

This situation is regrettable and the restaurant is taking action to resolve the misunderstanding. The Restaurant Manager is reaching out to the Legion with what we hope will be a mutually acceptable solution that will allow the sale of poppies, while at the same time ensuring the health and safety of our guests are not put at risk.

McDonald's commitment to supporting the Royal Canadian Legion and honouring the service of our Veterans is unwavering and continues to grow. In addition to Remembrance Day, McDonald’s also supports the work of True Patriot Love, and our Transitioning Military Program provides opportunities to men and women in uniform after their military service.
- 30 -

John Gibson
Manager, Communications - Western Canada
McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada Limited
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
